Her one tear inundates the globe, her one smile ebbs the tide away. We need to therefore choose to keep her happy, healthy and protected. She is the spirit which has kept the world lively, families laughing, and culture unforgettable. Women’s Rights, although collectively under Human Rights, doesn't lose its own identity and individuality. It all started in the late 19th century, when people agitated for the most basic human rights of free will and expression, in terms of women’s suffrage. And the centuries-long struggle turned out to be fruitful in almost all major democracies of the contemporary world. But a woman is not just made for political representation, but has her own self-dignity and personality, which somewhere in our history of traditions, has suppressed its recognition. The identity which every woman deserves, rich or poor, literate or illiterate, urban or rural, could be attained only when the right to live free from violence and discrimination; to enjoy the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health; to be educated; to own property; to vote; and to earn an equal wage, is attained. Sometimes women, as minorities underestimate themselves , they never pat their back and say they have done a good job , they don’t speak up for themselves or for their ideas. It is the responsibility of the society, which uses women for every aspect, to appreciate, revere, and reward women for their every stride towards making this globe inclusive. We as women ourselves strongly feel towards the redundant indifferences, afterall, who can understand a woman better than her own sex.
In despair and in worry, she takes her birth Gauges not more than her dowry, and ruffled helping hands She blooms with her aching womb and widening girth Eternal bleeds cause her sufferings, yet- she never cries.
Walks miles to satiate with a few drops of water She wraps herself in some discomfort Laboriously drags herself on land more hotter She pulls through the undying strife, yet- she never cries.
Veils her entice within Immolates her dreams to marriage Deems loving herself a sin She pacifies the erupting volcano of brutal torment, yet- she never cries.
She strives to restore her dignity Harsh retaliation for making herself seen Her esteem whipped, yet sustains her indomitability She has endured a lot, but couldn't win, yet- she never cries ~ Rijul
Rijul's Motive to write the poem: A woman sustains a rugged life, with adversities, blaming, pains, and atrocities, and with no support, empathy, or recognition. This shows the strength that the almighty has instilled in her. Leading through all the grief-stricken experiences, she has no medium to vent out her feelings, yet realising the strength that she possesses, she doesn't choose to cry.
Drawing By Hetvi
Hetvi's Motive to create this piece of art: Growing up in a conservative society , I was always told what I can and what I can not do , what my limits were and how far I can spread my wings. Always wanting to fight against these comments , I was ecstatic on finding out that I can draw out all the feelings that I have repressed for so long. To finally give an answer to those comments made me feel very content. The drawing was not only my answer but also the answer of all the women throughout the world who have heard these comments and wanted to shout back with an answer.
Drawing By Mihika
Mihika's Motive to create this piece of art: As a young girl, growing up, hearing comments about my clothes, behaviour, and more became the norm. In the same situations I noticed that my male peers were treated differently as compared to the girls. Our minds, from a very young age are conditioned to follow certain “rules” that only apply to women. I felt that my art piece was the perfect way to express my emotions about how women are trained to behave in a specific way, not only by men, but by society as a whole.
KUMMIYADDI Introduction Kummiyaddi is a folk dance popular in Southern Parts of India like Tamilnadu and Kerala. The dance which literally means Clap your hands, is performed by women in groups. This song was written by Subramania Bharathi, a Tamil poet, writer, social reformer and Indian independence activist. In this literary piece, the evils of women oppression, denying their right to education, and inhuman treatment are referred to as 'demons'. Bharathi mocks the male dominated society by saying that even though they abuse women they will never attempt to entirely wipe out the women population as their existence is essential for the survival of the human race. At a time when basic schooling for girls was rare and women were thought to be insignificant, Bharathi envisioned their presence in educational institutions, politics and judiciary. The work of art also celebrates the role of a woman in a family and ends with a line telling us the universal truth - "Women are not inferior to Men" they are both Equal.

Chrysl's Motive to translate the poem: I was greatly motivated to translate the Tamil literary piece - 'Kummiyaddi' due to various reasons. Firstly, Kummiyaddi is a dance performed by an all women group, thus in this song women themselves are raising their voices for women empowerment. Secondly, it was my earnest desire to translate one of Subramania Bharati's (an iconic poet, writer and champion for women's rights) many poems relating to emancipation of women into English - due to which his ideas could be further spread. Next, it clearly corresponds to our topic - Women's Rights, which makes it the perfect choice for translation.
मैं नारी हूँ Introduction; The poem and the poet highlight the difficulties of an Indian woman, and how she is far discriminated against and differentiated from the men in the society. Despite this the woman still performs what the society calls as ‘her duties and responsibilities’ without complaining and calmly. All she asks for is for someone to understand her.
Original Poem;

English Translation;
In every form, in every relationship I perform every duty, every responsibility Yes, I’m a woman But despite all of this I’m still called helpless My physique may be soft, yet my spirits are high The dreams that I had seen for myself, they are still stuck in cages The mountains of responsibility, I still take with a lot sincerity Yes, I’m a woman But despite all of this I’m still called helpless
They are sons, They have to be made educated and capable of everything What’s mine? I have to sit at my wedding, perform the rites Sons’ stubbornness, sons’ wishes all is heard My existence lies somewhere in the courtyard, under the veil I cover myself from The responsibility of balancing the world is on me, I bring to this world a new life, Yes, I’m a female But despite all of this I’m still called helpless
The sons’ are made independent, But I have been made told my limits in every step that I take, But then too I’m patient, And I still don’t forget to dream They are men, there’s no stopping them But for me the society keeps on watch on always My life might be full of thorns, but I still create new dimensions of success every time, Yes, I’m a female But despite all of this I’m still called helpless
The desire that everyone has, I’m the essence of that love, I’m the symbol of selfless duty and devotion Sometimes I have to face a difficult test in life, Sometimes I have to bear the torture of separation Sometimes I’m goddess Sita, sometimes goddess Draupadi In every age, in every era I have been chosen as a prey of the evil I am said to be the form of Durga and Lakshmi. But I remain despised in the family, But I still save the shame of both the families, My values always stop like nothing, But despite all of this I become Kalpana or Neerja, I’m said to make the history Yes, I’m a woman But despite all of this I’m called helpless Translation By Nidhi
Nidhi's Motive to translate the poem: I chose this poem because of how perfectly it highlights the struggles of Indian Women, Growing up I have seen the women around, work 24/7, they call this work as their duty. The different roles of women have been put to focus in the poem. The main highlight of the poem is the line “हाँ मैं नारी हूँ, फिरभी अबला बोली जाती हूँ” it means Yes, I’m a woman but I’m not helpless, I’m not dependent, I’m much more than these roles and duties that I play. The women asks for someone to understand her and not discriminate her. This poem was something I could relate to at personal level, thus.
How could the sense of safety and security of women be strengthened?
It is often perceived by common men, God has created two sexes, one to use, and another, to be used. The society has sorted it out well, according to the ambitions of a single cohort, the men. Throughout the histories of great civilisations, male dominance is evidently manifested in the duties they chose to perform, and the duties they have thrusted upon their opposites. It was not until the 19th century, when women's involvement, and other reforms paved their way, and chose to fight for themselves. But even during that journey, women were not secure, they were not able (allowed) to protect their dignity, and were looked upon as mere element of fulfilling sexual desires.
Though India has depicted its allegory as 'Mata', a vision of women power, it is despirting to know that streets in India are not safe for the very own 'Mata'. Women still fight for the safety, security, privacy and dignity that they deserve. The sense of insecurity that they undergo is a matter of serious concern, since the disgraceful acts performed by men, in public/personal, is no better than a crime, and deserves no exculpation.
Understanding the types of harassment (harassers) plays a vital role in identifying inappropriate gestures.
Power-player: These harassers insist on sexual favors in exchange for benefits they can dispense because of their positions in hierarchies, for example, getting or keeping a job, promotions etc.
Mother/Father Figure: These harassers will try to create mentor-like relationships with their targets, all the while masking their sexual intentions with pretenses towards personal, professional, or academic attention.
One-of-the-Gang: Harassment occurs when groups of men or women embarrass others with low comments, physical evaluations, or other unwanted sexual attention.
Serial Harasser: Harassers of this type carefully build up an image so that people would find it hard to believe they would do anyone any harm. They plan their approaches carefully, and strike in private so that it is their word against that of their victims.
Groper: Whenever the opportunity presents itself, these harassers' eyes and hands begin to wander, engaging in unwanted physical contact that may start in an innocuous way but lead to worse.
Stalking: Persistent watching, following, contacting or observing of an individual, sometimes motivated by what the stalker believes to be love, or by sexual obsession, or by anger and hostility.
If we analyze the reason for women being the victims, and no vehement actions against the offender is the dread of being harassed thereafter, with more discomfort and torture. In the majority of the situations, she keeps things to herself. In public buses or trains, the common reaction to this is that the woman might leave the seat or change her place, and only a very few raise their voices against it.
To throw light on what the government is implementing to ensure the safety and security of women, we would delve deeper into the Indian legal framework. The Ministry of Women and Child Development has administered various special laws relating to women such as:- 1. Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. 2. Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. 3.Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986. 4.Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 5. Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.
The above mentioned Ministry also administers the Juvenile Justice (care and protection of children) Act, 2015 and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.
To significantly reduce violence against women, the Government of India has set up the Nirbhaya Fund. The fund was to be used for projects which aimed at the safety and security of women in India. A majority of the fund went to the Home Ministry of India.
This money has been used for installing more CCTV cameras, making public transport safer, better lighting and the like. A recent report by Oxfam India claims that the money has not been utilized efficiently and that the government’s current spending in matters relating to curbing of violence against women is less than 25% of what is actually required. The Federal Women and Child development ministry, had used a meagre 20% of the money it had received up to the year 2019, which accounted to approximately one - fourth of the total Nirbhaya Fund spent since 2013.
According to National Crime Records Bureau(NCRB), the rate of pendency of crimes against women is a startling 91.3%, while that of the conviction is 22.2%. Some states have constantly reported zero utilisation of the Nirbhaya Fund.
To augment our understanding about the peril of harassment we conducted a survey. When we analysed the survey, the results were surprising. In response to the question ‘The streets in India are safe for women to walk freely at late nights.’, 80.5% of our survey respondents do not agree with this statement.’Safe streets’ means for women to be able to travel in city at any times without a male and without any threats of harassment or sexual violence.Unlike the meaning, many women fear sexual harrasment in public places and feel unsafe to commute alone.
In our next question 74 of our respondents confirmed to have witnessed or be a victim of a disgraceful act against a women, many of which include stalking,groping,cat-calling,non-consensual consent and much more.Women of any age has atleast once been a victim of such disgraceful act. This year itself National Commission for Women(NCW) reported a 46% rise in complaints against in women .Women and girls together account for 71 % of all human trafficking victims detected globally.
On asking the participants how they would respond to such situations 48.3% of them responded saying that they would call someone for help while the other 41.4% said that they would take action themselves.Participants would call an elder ,police or stand up and speak against it in a situation of disgraceful action against women.
The participants were divided on how domestic violence should be dealt with 63.2% saying society must be involved and the other 34.5% saying that it should be solved at a personal level. Violence against women or girls is considered as gender based violence. It results in physical or mental harm . Violence usually includes, but is not limited to physical, sexual and psychological occurring in the family or community. Violence limits women’s choices;their ability to access education, earn a living and participate in social life.
According to our survey, being conservative/overprotective is not an accepted way to keep women safe. 46% and 29.9% of the survey respondents answered to this question with strongly disagree and disagree respectively. That is, they do not feel that being conservative or overprotective with women is a good way to keep them safe, and rightly so, it is not. Women are to be given equal rights and freedom, they should not be considered inferior to the opposite gender. It is for society to change it’s mindset now and not for the women to continue the age old stereotypes.
In the opinion of the general public about creating awareness between the two genders about domestic violence and sexual harassment, they believe that children should be well educated about it from a young age by their families, and schools should be open to such discussions.
The way boys are grown up in a desi household, they are given more entitlement than their sisters, this makes them feel superior to the women in the outside world too. This must stop. Parents should not ingrain gender stereotypes in young children. Boys can play with dolls and girls can take part in sports. Ingraining stereotypes will obviously impact their thinking as an adult too. Boys should be made aware of their boundaries and told that they are in no way superior to girls. Girls too, should be taught to stand up and speak up for themselves if they witness something like that. They should not be afraid. They should be brought up in a comfortable and safe environment, where they are not scared to share or talk about such things with their parents or mentors.
Social media has leveraged thousands of women to raise their voices against the evils. Thus many women have opened up on social platforms about their fight against harassment. Their stories make people realise that this is a serious issue and there’s something serious we need to do about it. Campaigns and awareness programs can also be helpful to bring light to such topics. Especially for the generation older to us, because they are not very well equipped with Social Media. Such campaigns and programs should also be conducted in rural areas.
Men should overall be responsible for making a safer environment for women. However all of this comes on a long term basis, for if anything happens, women helpline numbers should be conveniently available 24/7. Safety apps with trackable GPS should also be enabled 24/7 and made common among the people. Both Helpline numbers and safety apps should be well equipped to have a quicker response to those seeking help. The following are the helpline services women could use in unforeseen circumstances; 1. 1091 (Women's Helpline) 2. 181 (Domestic Abuse) 3. Safetipin, Raksha, Shake2Safety, bSafe (Women Safety Apps)
Women’s safety means a safer, healthier and more productive environment for everyone. The eradication of patriarchal stereotypes, and orthodox mindsets will lead to a society which is developed in both the physical and mental aspects. It's the moral responsibility of every human to contribute in making their community safer for women.
The topic of sexual harassment which once used to be a very shameful thing to talk about is now bursting out of the attic of downplayed and forcefully quietened topics, with women all over getting braver and coming out with their own stories.
The #MeToo movement which rose to fame in 2017 is a social movement against sexual abuse and sexual harassment where people publicized allegations of sex crimes. It helped in empowering women, especially young and vulnerable women through empathy and solidarity through strength in numbers by visibly demonstrating the sheer number of women that have faced sexual harassment.
Sexual harassment is a crime and is nothing to be ashamed of. If the harassment is nonconsensual, the victim is never at fault, irrespective of their clothes, sobriety, age, and more. Irrespective of the type of harassment one is facing, it is very important to document everything. Incase you are being harassed or feel unsafe, the following points are very important
Note the time, date and place
Save copies or screenshots of texts, pictures and emails
Tell an adult, co-worker or a superior
Say NO
Fighting against harassment is very important for the safety of all women. Even though the mindset is changing, it is not enough. We need to elevate and escalate discussions about women’s safety to the forefront to ensure that decades of incompetence and backward thoughts are transformed into a thriving community which is a safe space for all women.
A good literary text is judged based on its capacity to influence people, the impact that it creates, and how clearly the idea is presented. Taking into consideration all these parameters, the below listed articles written by the partner school were a perfect match. 1] Le droit d'être différent 2] Abortion - Human Right 3] Gender inequality In our rampant lives, we often remain oblivious about embracing our differences and those of others. The text Right to be Different gave us a different dimension to accept the uniqueness that we possess, and to fearlessly express it to the world no matter what rules are set by society. It lets us refuse to get bogged down under societal pressures and caged by limits set by others. As quoted by our partner school, “No child should be born a ‘mistake’.” This vehemently points out the belief that giving birth to a child is a strong commitment and a choice, a female has the right to control her body, and make this choice, as bringing an unwished child in the world would also lead to the sacrificing of the child’s rights. Our team strongly feels towards the redundant indifferences that are faced by women, afterall, who can understand a woman better than her own sex. Gender inequality is a major problem, a difficulty that is faced by all countries across the globe, irrespective of whether the country is developed or not. Thus, we as a community should aim towards creating an inclusive environment, where equal rights and opportunities for women arise not in dispute.
~ Rijul, Nidhi, Hetvi, Chrysl, Mihika
Le droit d'être différent- What struck a chord?
An In-depth reflection by Rijul and Hetvi You are mischievous, you're cool, you're cute, you're smart, but are you different? Yes? Though, surely, you never got an opportunity to express it, and even if you did, it wasn't accepted. The text 'Le droit d'être différent' makes you ponder upon this quandary. If being 'normal' or 'usual' was the only motive, why did God create us so differently? Because the universe wants us to be unique, to make our own mark, and more importantly, define ourselves before anyone else does it for us. The stereotypes that the article manifests about a 'customized' life have to be escaped to be unique. Changing ourselves to fit in a 'category' or 'society' is the biggest harm you could do to yourself. We need to sometimes live by our own choices, and not let the 'superfluous rules' set by the herd bother us, yet stay rooted to our values. The writer of the text believes that she/he feels safer where they have the choice to live freely and not fear and feel insecure about how society reacts to them expressing their differences. "What sets you different can sometimes feel like a burden but it's not, and that's what makes you great", quoted by Emma Stone, sets an epitome that being 'different' is actually being 'normal'. Lift the burden of restrictions, opinions, judgements, and rejections and replace all of them with just one thing, uniqueness. Is there a solution for being unique and being alienated by society? YES, there is a solution for this . The solution is you, it begins with YOU. If we learn to accept ourselves, it is easier to accept and embrace our differences. The author writes how he/she wants to express their uniqueness and embrace their differences in a society that accepts her as is, and create a space for an individual to demonstrate her/his differences. Along with embracing differences comes embracing your perfections, imperfections, personality, looks, collectively, accepting your true self. As one of our favorite quotes by confucius reads “Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it” , the insecurities of imperfections ,personality, looks , being different comes from the standards set by the society and what we perceive as normal . Therefore, the standards and what people see as normal is just a perception . And what is powerful about it is that you are in control of your perception, you choose how you perceive yourself . You learn to accept your true self once your perception of yourself changes. The writer shares the lyrics of the song ``Scars to your Beautiful ``by Alessia Cara “ And you have nothing to change, the world can only change the heart, no scars to its beauty”, explaining how one is perfect the way they are and there is nothing to change . In the end, learning to love yourself is more important than making people accept you. Let your attitude, vision, conviction, and dream be first reflected by your bosom, then by that of the world.
Communication and Collaboration
Communicating in-person has its own edges. You explore a realm different than yours, you identify unique personalities and give justice to an individual opinion. We took all the benefits of such a conversation with our partner school and its brilliant students. Conversing with those students was an enriching opportunity for our whole group. Though, we were all set to discuss human rights, the discussions turned their tables and we landed into an altogether out-of the box conversations. This time it was more of understanding the people, their language and culture. The collaboration with our partner school makes us feel more confident to bond with people, though seperated via laptop screens.
Our journey so far... "We do not learn from experience, We learn from reflecting our experience", Eumind has given us an opportunity to do exactly the same. With an amalgamation of wonderfully crafted pieces of texts, the development of critical thinking, discussions and team commitment, our process in building was a lifelong learning experience. Every individual had something to take away from this enriching opportunity, thus each of our team member has manifested their take-aways below:
Rijul's Experience with Eumind EUMIND has made me experience a culmination of hard work, tenacity, and critical thinking. Working on this project was a combination of team spirit, competition, anxieties about deadlines, understanding, and supporting each other. This enriching opportunity leveraged me to explore the world beyond our vision and to actually start caring about the topics which had failed to receive the attention and contemplation it deserved. Leading the team was a great pleasure, and altogether we made an impeccable team. We are very grateful for the support and help which we received from our teacher, thus making this process a wonderful journey.
Nidhi's Experience with Eumind Working on the EUMIND project has been one of the greatest opportunities that I’ve had in a while. This was my first time working with a group of people whom I do not know from earlier, however, it went out very well, all of us were co operative about each other’s ideas and thoughts, which was one of the factors having flawless work. I got to learn a lot from my team mates, throughout. Our topic, Women’s Rights was also something that all of us could relate to, thus a lot of things came from personal point of views, which made it easier for us. I got to work as an IT director here, which definitely helped me leash out my technological and creative side. Overall it was an great and very insightful experience.
Chrysl's Experience with Eumind Eumind 2021-22 has been instrumental in teaching me the valuable lessons of dedication, punctuality, determination and hard work. It gave me an international platform to collectively work to raise awareness for Human rights in general and Women's Rights in specific. While I delved deeper into the social problems relating to the safety of women and the oppression faced by them, I gained a deeper understanding of the issue. The project instilled team spirit and collaboration in me. Overall, I'm overjoyed to have taken part in this wonderful program.
Hetvi's Experience with Eumind This was my first time participating in EUMIND and it has proven to be a great experience. It taught me about hard work , working along deadlines and most importantly teamwork. Along with these important values it taught me about women rights and its importance . It helped me put my thoughts over crucial matters into words . As I researched and dived deeper into the chosen topic , I developed a greater understanding of all the injustice against women .EUMIND not only taught me about women rights but also helped me broaden my perspective over human rights in general. Overall it has been an informative and fun experience and I am grateful to be a part of EUMIND 2021.
Mihika's Experience with Eumind Eumind has been a wonderful addition to my 11th grade experiences. Researching and creating content with my team exposed me to a plethora of new ideas and opinions that helped my mind expand. Discussing various topics, especially women’s rights, as a group of five young girls was a great bonding experience and we could share and observe common experiences we all had been through. I am grateful Eumind gave me the opportunity and a platform to voice my views.
